We both made a trip in to Roanoke for the weekend to visit our families and then get some time in to hangout together which was great. I made it in to see my nephew’s 1st birthday! Waylon looked like he had such a good time!
Kristen also looked to have had a pretty good time :]
After some birthday action we headed out to the Mcaphees knob parking lot and got ready to head out on our 12 mile journey to Tinker Cliffs. We had a late start at about 2pm. But we made some great time!
About two hours in we made it to Mcaphees knob and took a short break to enjoy the view - it was magnificent!
We also brought along my best bud RUFUS! He had a great time and it was his first time camping outside ever.
Along the way we got to see a fair amount of awesome views and rock formations. We also pushed some of our limits a bit. Even though this was only 12 miles, there was a fair amount of elevation change that took place. Along with this we were carrying a fair sized back with all our camping gear and water.
After about 4.5 hours we made it over to Tinker Cliffs just in time to catch the sun going down behind the appalachian mountains. It was a brilliant view and a good way to relax.
But we were not finished yet, we had another mile to go before we could call it a night. We made it to the Lambert Meadow Shelter around 7pm which gave us just enough time to build a small fire and make some dinner. Kristen made us a fantastic dinner with her new jetboil which is an awesome tool for quick food. After dinner we threw out our sleeping bags and laid down with rufus snuggled between us for the night.
Rufus had a long night as he was preoccupied with the coyotes and owls he hear through the night. He ended up crawling in my sleeping bag and hanging out by the head hole until morning though and all was good. At this point we were up and making breakfast and getting ready to set out for our return trip back.
The second day was a bit more gloomy than the first but we beat the rain and made it back to the car while staying dry. Afterwards we took a quick trip down the road to the Homeplace! Believe it or not, Kristen had never been here before so we had a late lunch - which was phenomenal! - and headed back home. Once we made it back, we all showered (Even rufus) and then hit the bed early. It was a great weekend!
