The day technically started late. we set out around 7pm on Friday night and started driving north in the ol' USS Land Yacht. we packed up what we needed and got the van ready to roll and took off a bit late. We were hoping that by leaving at night we would save some time since we were planning on heading out 5am the next morning.
We made it to the Pennsylvania border and pulled in to a rest stop for the night where we laid out our sleeping pads and cot's and slept in the van. Some of us slept better than others =p. (I was on the floor which wasn’t the comfiest, though I had a camping pad which helped.) The cool part is the van wasn’t as cramped as you might think, for sleeping three people.
The next morning we were up bright and early and started driving around 6am. Our goal today was to make it to Portland Maine! It was a long and grueling journey. Driving with the Hicks Family usually includes lots of yelling and pointing and "Hey look at this! Did you see that!'s". It allowed for use to see some pretty neat things though and we still had a great time =]
We did hit a load of traffic around the New York area and that carried through all the way till we hit Massachusetts. Once we made it past there we were home free and pulled in to Portland around 6pm.
Portland sits right on the water and has a pretty awesome downtown district with plenty of old buildings. The night life is pretty typical of a downtown with lots of music and activity, but the sites were beautiful. Fun fact this is also the home town of John Ford.
We ended up grabbing some dinner on the water at the Portland Lobster Company. The food was good (I think they just need to work on their planning skills because the bar was in between the area you got your food and the area you had to sit. It gets rough when the dance floor is popping, and then we headed to find a place to stay for the night. We were camping again in the van this night since we had to get up bright and early.
