We woke up again bright and early after another night in the van. We were able to pull into a Walmart and get some sleep away from the highway which was nice. We missed the sunrise by a little bit but that didn’t stop us from making our way over to the Portland Head Lamp located south of Portland. This was a really pretty stop and we spent our morning here eating breakfast and enjoying the view.
After heading out from the lighthouse we were planning on going to the international cryptozoology museum but it didn’t open till 11 and we needed to hit the road by then. So, we moved on and went to the Garmin headquarters where we saw Eartha – the world’s largest rotating globe!
From here we made our way just a bit down the road to the Desert of Maine. This is a natural phenomenon where a bunch of sand is located in the middle of a forest – pretty neat!
Moving on we made a quick pit stop by Stephen Kings House – He probably hates us…
Our next stop was in Bucksport Maine where we took a trip to fort Knox and went up the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. This is the highest Bridge Observatory in the world (of 3 total). We spent way to long here exploring the tower and fort Knox but it was a really cool stop and I think we all enjoyed it more than we planned on.
The Fort was on the corner of the river and was partly underground. It used a Pentagon shape to trap people in a ditch between the outer walls and the inner core so they could attack on both sides.
We then made a looping stop towards Bar Harbor next to Acadia National Park. I wish we had spent a bit more time here as it looked like a neat town but we were on somewhat of a time schedule to make sure we were in Saint John so we could catch the ferry in the morning.
It’s also worth mentioning that Acadia National Park is awesome and has tons of cool spots. I will need to make a trip back here to catch a sunrise from the Cadillac Mountains as it is the first place in the US to see a sunrise.
Moving from Bar Harbor we hit Route 9 to head over to Calais where we would cross over to New Brunswick. We were stuck in border control for about a half hour before we could make our way out to Saint John. We pulled in around 11:42PM (we lost an hour of time). And set up camp to rise early the next morning. From my first views of Canada – it seems like a nifty place!
