Today we work up early with hopes to catch the sunrise, and we did! The sunset here is a magical moment where people clap at the end like the tail of a movie. But for sunrise, not as many people show up. It is a magical experience all on its own.
Our main goal today was to try and rent a car to travel around the Island in and explore a few of the cool beaches around the area. We did luck out and get a sweet Chevy Matiz to scoot us around and scoot it did!
Once we got off the lot and were mobile, we made our way down to Kamari beach. This was a black beach, meaning it has black sand. But really it was a buncha rocks, but the water was so clear it was beautiful! The water gets deep really fast, so it’s not great for snorkeling, but it is great for diving!
We then moved on to our next beach – Red beach. This beach is notable from all the red rocks that surround it. This was a much calmer spot and almost gave off the impression that it was a locals/secretive beach. But this is definitely not the case. The wind did die down here (it was blowing like crazy at the first beach) which made for a bit nicer swim, but at this point the sun was covered by clouds and it was getting chilly.
We then left the beach and made our way back to Fira (the Matiz handled those tight roads like a champ!) and walked around downtown a bit. We ended up stopping to get some Crepes which were super-duper great – totally recommend getting some if you are around the area.
Our next main goal was to make it to the Akrotiri lighthouse to watch the sunset. We did make it and there were some cool rocks that you could get some fantastic pictures from. The sunset we pretty great until it went behind the clouds towards the end – so we were cut off a bit. But that gave us time to drive back to Oia in the Matiz and get lost a bit while the sun was disappearing completely. At one point, we ended up going up what seemed like an almost vertical hill which was sketchy, but it worked out.
We ended our night by grabbing some dinner at one of the places near our rom and grabbing dessert in one of the bakery’s. It was an excellent day and a bit sad as the next day we would be packing up and heading back to Athens for our flight home.
